Having Kleine Levin Syndrome

Often abbreviated to KLS, it is a rare neurological disease.

Kleine Levin syndrome is characterized by frequent episodes of prolonged sleep. It is a fairly rare disease. Sleep duration can be as long as 20 hours a day in people with the disease. The causes are still unknown.

In general these people should avoid alcohol and any period of intense fatigue to avoid triggering this disease. This is just as impressive for the patients as it is for the people around them. 15% of people with this syndrome have serious after-effects. Verbal memory can be affected and eating disorders can appear.

There is a lithium-based treatment to reduce or even eliminate this disease.
